A Vision for Our Schools
Restore trust and transparency
Too often, the school board moves forward on major initiatives without building support from parents, teachers, or the community. The 2023 bond issue and the failed rollout of the freshman academies and career pathways are clear examples. Families and educators deserve a voice in the process—and taxpayers deserve transparency about how and why decisions are made. I’m running to restore trust by promoting open communication, honest reporting, and genuine collaboration.
Put students first
Our schools face real challenges—more English Language Learners needing support, classrooms lacking adequate para educators, and tight budgets forcing difficult choices. Too much money goes to outside consultants instead of classrooms. We need strong STEM and career programs, but not by cutting music, arts, and activities that make education complete. I will fight for balanced priorities that give students a well-rounded education.
Support teachers and rebuild morale
Teachers are the heart of our schools. According to the district’s own survey, 47% of Kennedy teachers, 46% of Washington teachers, and 27% of Jefferson teachers have considered leaving. Many describe a culture of fear and a lack of support from the district administration. That is unacceptable. I will work to build a culture where teachers feel heard, supported, and respected—because when teachers thrive, students do too.
Be an independent voice
I’m not running to represent any special interest or political faction. I will make decisions based on what’s right for students, teachers, and taxpayers—I will not be a rubber stamp for the administration. We need independent thinkers on the board who will ask hard questions, insist on accountability, and put our community first. I am not afraid to stand alone when necessary, but I will always stand for what’s right.
Protect neighborhood schools
Like many Cedar Rapids families, when we bought our home, we chose our neighborhood based on the local schools. In rejecting the 2023 bond issue, the community made it clear that neighborhood schools matter. I will fight to keep them strong and vibrant.
